Santa Teresa 1796 Irish Whiskey Cask Finish Rum
Santa Teresa 1796 Irish Whiskey Cask Finish is a limited-edition Venezuelan rum that combines Santa Teresa’s signature triple-aged Solera rum with the character imparted by Irish whiskey casks from Teeling. The result is a sophisticated crossover between aged rum and Irish whiskey, with a profile built around caramelized sweetness, citrus, dried fruit, vanilla, oak and gentle spice. Production
The expression begins with the classic Santa Teresa 1796, a Venezuelan rum made using a distinctive triple-aging process. Different rum components—including light, heavy and pot-still distillates—are aged separately, blended, and then matured through Santa Teresa's Solera system. The base rum incorporates components aged for as long as 35 years, contributing considerable depth and complexity. Bacardi Santa Teresa
For this special release, the finished rum receives an additional maturation in Teeling Irish whiskey casks. The whiskey barrels add a layer of malt, vanilla, oak and spice while allowing the underlying Venezuelan rum character to remain prominent. It is bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof) in a 750 ml format. Tasting Profile
Appearance:
Rich reddish amber with pronounced legs in the glass.
Nose:
The aroma opens with toffee, caramel and vanilla, followed by dried fruit, dates, citrus and subtle oak. There is also a gentle malt character from the Irish whiskey casks, creating an interesting bridge between rum and whiskey. Craft Spirits Exchange
Palate:
The palate is rich but balanced, combining the naturally rounded character of Santa Teresa 1796 with whiskey-cask influence. Look for:
The citrus component keeps the sweetness from becoming heavy, while the oak and spice provide structure. Craft Spirits Exchange
Finish:
The finish is long, warm and smooth, with lingering citrus, vanilla, oak and soft sweetness. Rather than ending with an intense alcoholic heat, it gradually fades into a combination of dried fruit, spice and wood.
Overall Character
This is a particularly interesting choice for someone who enjoys both premium rum and Irish whiskey. The Irish whiskey cask doesn't completely transform the rum; instead, it adds another dimension to Santa Teresa's already complex Solera profile.
Compared with standard Santa Teresa 1796, which is characterized by nuts, leather, vanilla, cinnamon, dark chocolate, prunes, honey and pepper, this cask-finished version places greater emphasis on citrus, dried fruit, caramel, vanilla, oak and whiskey-derived spice. Bacardi Santa Teresa+1
Best enjoyed: Neat in a tulip or Glencairn-style glass, allowing the rum to warm slightly and reveal the whiskey-cask aromas. A single large ice cube can soften the alcohol and emphasize the fruit and vanilla notes.
In one sentence: Santa Teresa 1796 Irish Whiskey Cask Finish is a 45% ABV Venezuelan Solera rum finished in Teeling Irish whiskey casks, delivering layers of caramel, candied citrus, dates, vanilla, nuts, oak and gentle spice in a smooth, warming and sophisticated finish. Craft Spirits Exchange
