Detailed Description
Tasting Notes
Aromas:
Bright red fruit, maraschino cherry, plum, wild berries, herbs, subtle tobacco, and earthy/mineral nuances.
Palate:
Fresh and juicy, with red cherry and plum flavors, lively acidity, fine-grained tannins, and a savory herbal character. Despite País sometimes being associated with rustic wines, this bottling is notably clean, refined, and balanced, while retaining an appealing untamed character. GGarage Wine Co+1
Finish:
Dry, persistent, lightly mineral, with lingering red fruit, herbs, and earthy notes.
What Does “215 BC” Mean?
The name is a historical reference rather than an indication of the vintage. A winery was documented making País in 1548, while Cabernet Sauvignon was documented around 1763. The difference is 215 years, hence “215 BC” — 215 years Before Cabernet. GGarage Wine Co.
Overall Character
This is a great example of old-vine Chilean País: fresh rather than heavy, fruit-driven but savory, with enough tannin and acidity to make it very food-friendly. The 2021 vintage received 93 points from Wine Advocate and 92 from Vinous, with Vinous highlighting its maraschino cherry, plum, herbal notes, juicy texture, and fine tannins.
